ArchivalResource

Papers of Edward S. Brown and the Brown family, 1830-1853.

The papers consist chiefly of letters from Edward S. Brown, a student at Randolph-Macon College, to family members concerning his life and studies at the college, friends, family members, and future plans. Of interest are comments on the Campbellite crusade in Hopewell, Va., and their baptismal controversy with local Baptists. Brown family correspondence conveys personal, family, local and religious news. Topics include Wytheville, Va.; a controversy involving Philip St. George Cocke; religious activities in Richmond, 1847; religious events in Lynchburg, 1851, including the preaching of John Cowper Granbery, Brother Walker preaching for the "coloured" people, church attendance and McGee's revival. One letter from C. Garland, Rectory at Berryville, Va. 1845, to Sarah C. Brown, Variety Hills, Nelson Co., mentions Charlottesville, Va., the new chaplain at the University of Virginia, and "Castle Hill."
